Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, California, Play Mountain Place is a delightful private preschool and elementary school that has been nurturing young minds since 1949. As one of the oldest humanistic alternative schools in the United States, we pride ourselves on creating a warm and welcoming environment where children can thrive.

Our Philosophy

At Play Mountain Place, we believe in the power of play! Our educational approach is inspired by the ideas of great thinkers like Carl Rogers, A.S. Neill, and our founder, Phyllis Fleishman. We focus on providing a play-based, child-directed, and non-authoritarian learning experience. This means that children are encouraged to explore, discover, and learn at their own pace, making choices that resonate with their interests.

Learning Through Choice

Our program is bursting with opportunities for children to engage in both child-initiated and teacher-offered activities. The best part? Every activity is a choice! We believe that learning should be fun and exciting, so there are no compulsory curriculum plans here.

Personalized Attention

With a teacher-to-child ratio of 1:4-7, depending on the age group, your child will receive plenty of personal attention and care. Our dedicated teachers are here to guide and support each child on their unique learning journey.

School Year and Hours

Our school year runs from Mid-September to Mid-June, with school days from 9 am to 3 pm. For families needing a little extra time, we offer extended care before and after school for those who qualify, available for an additional fee.

Summer Fun

We also host a Summer Camp for currently enrolled families, ensuring that the fun and learning continue even when school is out!
